paddling, thriving, surviving after cancer

About us

Our Wigan based Dragon Boat group encourages breast cancer awareness, whilst getting fit and having fun!

After seeing an article about dragonboat paddling on Windermere our chairperson decided to try it out with a view to starting a group in Wigan, It looked fun and after contacting the Paddlers for Life group at Windermere she was invited to have ago, Six ladies from Wigan went with her and their were all made very welcome, when she came back she managed to get the money for at Scotmans Flash Youth Service Sailing Centre. We had about 25 people paddling on both occasions, some ladies came alone others brought a family member for support. The camaraderie and support from the ladies was amazing, the opportunities to meet people with same problems as you is very beneficial. The team is also made up of husbands, partners, friends and supporters; we see their involvement as helpful to both the cancer survivors as well as to other families.

Wigan Water Dragons are a group of Breast Cancer survivors who meet weekly to enjoy the exercise of paddling the dragon boat. This exercise programme has been set up after research carried out by Dr Helen Crank at Sheffield Hallam University into the benefits of paddling for breast cancer survivors which help reduce Lymphoedema after surgery and gives an improvement in general health and physical and mental health.
